Postdoctoral Position in Earth Sciences (f/m/d)
Information:
The Experimental Mineral Physics (EMP) group in the Institute of Geochemistry and Petrology (led by Prof. Motohiko Murakami) at ETH Zurich invites applications for a fixed term 3-years postdoc position with a possible start after July 1st 2024.
Our research focuses on the ultrahigh-pressure experimental mineral physics to explore the internal structure, mineralogy and evolution of the Earth and the other planets. The project will involve high-pressure and high-temperature experimental work using a laser-heated or externally-heated diamond anvil cell combined with various laser spectroscopic methods (Raman, Brillouin scattering) and synchrotron X-rays to determine the physical properties of deep planetary materials. The successful candidate is expected to perform high-pressure and high-temperature experimental research in collaboration with group members, to teach, and to undertake infrastructural tasks.

Im Rahmen des Forschungsprojektes SulfRox: Entwicklung eines mischoxidbasierten
Oxidationskatalysators mit ausreichender Toleranz gegenüber oxidischen Schwefel-
verbindungen (SOx) ist ab Herbst 2023 am Institut für Mineralogie und Petrographie der Universität Innsbruck eine auf drei Jahre befristete Promotionsstelle in Vollzeit (40
Wochenstunden) zu besetzen.
Die Energiegewinnung durch Verbrennung sowohl fossiler als auch biologischer Ausgangs-materialien (wie Biomasse, Abfälle usw.) ist ein zentrales Element der Prozesswärme-bereitstellung für
Industrie, Verkehr sowie im Kommunalbereich. Dabei werden z.T. toxischebzw. klimaschädliche Abgasschadstoffe freigesetzt, die gemäß EU-weit verbindlicher Strategien einer katalytischen oder
thermischen Abgasnachbehandlung unterzogen werden müssen. Der Einsatz katalytisch aktiver Substanzen (kurz Oxi-Kats) bietet dabei eine ganze Reihe von Vorteilen, ist aber bislang nur auf
bestimmte Anwendungssegmente beschränkt (z.B. Minderung des Schadstoffausstoßes bei Dieselmotoren). Diese Katalysatoren basieren aktuell auf teuren edelmetallbasierten Beschichtungen und
erfordern weitgehend schwefelfreie Kraftstoffe zur Vermeidung eines Aktivitätsverlustes durch „Schwefelvergiftung“. Im Rahmen dieses Forschungsvorhabens sollen neue alternative, edelmetallfreie
Formulierungen für Oxi-Kats entwickelt und umfassend für den Einsatz im industriellen Maßstab charakterisiert werden.
Die Finanzierung des Projektes, das in enger Kooperation mit dem Institut für
Verfahrenstechnik des industriellen Umweltschutzes an der Montanuniversität Leoben sowie der Firma Ceram-Austria durchgeführt werden soll, erfolgt im Rahmen des BRIDGE- Programms der
österreichischen Förderagentur für wirtschaftsnahe Forschung, Entwicklung und Innovation (FFG).
Der/die erfolgreiche Bewerber(in) sollte einen Masterabschluss in Mineralogie, Chemie oder einer verwandten Disziplin vorweisen können. Fundierte Kenntnisse im

The successful candidate will have specific responsibility for the acquisition, field collection, care, development, research, interpretation and display of Geological Collections, meeting the pre-opening collection development requirements, as well as building a world-class Geological Collection with a solid foundation focused on the indigenous Geological specimens of the UAE.
